The UK research councils, under government pressure, are all increasingly focussed on funding ‘applied science’. There is currently a petition on the Prime Minister’s web site calling for a renewed focus on basic science funding – I encourage you to sign up at http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/honest-discovery/.
